Trekking excursions in Lacona – Island of Elba
Capo di Stella ring - Length 6 km – Total drop 80 metres – Difficulty: easy
Going out from Residence Lacona you have to turn left, in direction to the beach of Margidore; at the first curve after Camping Lacona you have to turn right and slowly climb an asphalt street. After about a kilometre walk you’ll see a white bar which obstructs the way to cars, then you have to take an easy path and from there you can see Capoliveri and Punta Calamita in the distance (the sunrise on the sky of Capoliveri is particularly suggestive). There are many ways to reach the cliffs, small coves and rocks of different colours and shapes. If you feel like facing a more technical route, you can walk a ring going completely round the promontory of Capo di Stella, having the chance to admire the view on Lacona Gulf and its beautiful sandy beach on the way back. At the end of the ring you have to take again the asphalt street and after about five hundred metres you’ll be back at the residence for a refreshing swim in our pool or a relaxing stretching in our park.
Segagnana Ring – Length 9 km – Total drop 400 metres – Difficulty: medium
Walking along the beach of Lacona, after Punta Contessa you reach the nice beach of Laconella. From here the walk becomes more tiring but charming, covering the old military street of the Segagnana. The area is rich of perfumed Mediterranean flora and it’s a privileged place to observe the geological conformation of the central part of the Island of Elba. When you get to the highest point of the route you have to turn left and walk for a while along the Grande Traversata Elbana, the road which joins the two opposite capes of the island. Near an ancient sheepfold you have to take a path which leads to Capo Fonza; from here the descent becomes more difficult and slippery because of the rocks – chaotically placed argillites . In ancient times the path leading back to Laconella, now totally surrounded by the Mediterranean flora, was intensely cultivated with vines.
Monte Orello ring – Length 13 km – Total drop 400 metres - Difficulty: hard.
From Residence Lacona you have to head for Capoliveri, after two kilometres you take a kartway which rises towards Poggio Corsetti; once arrived on the top you go on a dirt road which skirts the hill enjoying a wonderful view on the bays of Capoliveri, Margidore, Lacona and Laconella. At a crossroads you walk across the hill towards a farm and from there the route rises and slowly goes downhill to the quarry of Colle Reciso. You go across the provincial road and keep on walking along the military road of San Martino, tagged by the trail marker 65. After about two kilometres walk, near a fire barrier you’ll find a footpath among an ilex grove leading to Lacona.
Mountain Bike excursions at Lacona - Island of Elba
Lacona - Monte Tambone - Monte Barbatoia - Lacona - Lengh 20 km - Total drop 500 metres - Difficulty: Medium
From Residence Lacona you have to head for Marina di Campo. At the beginning of the provincial road of Monumento you turn left and take the dirt road of Segagnana. After about 1,5 kilometres the road starts to rise and become irregular. For about 400 metres riding a bicycle will be impossible. Near a sign of the National Park of Tuscan Archipelago the road will be again good for cycling on. The itinerary among the Mediterranean flora will give you wonderful views. The steep slope culminates after about 9 kilometres in the peak of Monte Tambone, about 377 metres above the sea level. This is one of the few places of the Tuscan Archipelago where you can see on the horizon all the Tuscan islands from. A fast descent will lead you to Marina di Campo and from there a small path will take you to the road of Colle Reciso. The slope – on a good road-bed – ends in Buca di Bomba. Another small path will lead you on the top of Monte Barbatoia; once covered the crest of the mount and arrived near a fire barrier you’ll find a path among an ilex grove leading to Lacona.
Lacona – Monte Orello – Monte Castello – Colle Reciso – Lacona – Distance 28 km – Total drop 650 metres – Difficulty: hard
The departure is from the provincial road towards Porto Azzurro, after about 2 kilometres asphalt you open into a path and walk for about 3 kilometres until the fire barrier of Monte Orello. From here you go along a dirt road which skirts the mountain. At a crossroads you have to keep on climbing up to the top of Monte Orello, where it’s possible to visit some military positions of the Second World War. The descent begins near a five hundreds metres long fire barrier, where the bravest ones can enjoy the high speed. Near a water store you take a path going downhill to Campo ai Peri. Once crossed the provincial road you start climbing towards Monte Castello, and at the crossroads after about two kilometres you have to keep the left and take a footpath which leads to the slopes of the mountain of the famous Volterraio castle. You keep on climbing on the asphalt road until the descent towards Nisporto. Once covered the dirt road of the Falconaia until Magazzini, you will take a not very busy asphalt road until Fonte Schiumoli. From here you will reach Colle Reciso and near the military road of San Martino there’s a downhill path leading to Lacona.
